Common date calculations

When do you need to count days between two dates?

Calculating the number of days between two dates is one of the most common everyday tasks. Here are the most frequent situations where this calculator is useful:

  • Countdowns to events — find out how many days until your holiday, birthday, wedding or any important date
  • Work and project deadlines — calculate exactly how many working days remain before a delivery date or deadline
  • Legal and administrative terms — many legal deadlines are expressed in calendar or working days. A single day's error can invalidate a claim or filing
  • Employment — calculate seniority, duration of sick leave, notice periods or contract end dates
  • Finance — calculate loan terms, fixed deposit maturity dates or invoice payment deadlines
  • Health — track pregnancy weeks, medication cycles or recovery periods

How many days until Christmas?

Click the "Days until Christmas" button above and the calculator will show you the exact number of days remaining until 25 December. You can also set the start date to any past date to see how long ago a previous Christmas was.

How to calculate days between two dates

To count the days between two dates manually, subtract the earlier date from the later one. This sounds simple but becomes complicated when months have different lengths or when a leap year falls within the range. Our calculator handles all of this automatically. Some quick examples:

  • From 1 January to 31 December → 364 days (365 in a leap year)
  • From 15 March to 15 September → 184 days
  • From 1 April to 1 October → 183 days

Calendar days vs working days

Calendar days include every day of the week — Monday through Sunday, including weekends and public holidays.

Working days only count Monday to Friday, excluding weekends. Many legal deadlines, delivery estimates and business processes are measured in working days. This calculator lets you choose which type you need with a single click.

Does the calculator account for leap years?

Yes. A leap year occurs every four years and has 366 days instead of 365, with the extra day on 29 February. Our calculator automatically accounts for leap years in any date range, giving you a perfectly accurate result regardless of how many leap years fall within your selected period.
