Avocado calories by size and portion
The number of calories in an avocado depends on the amount of edible flesh you eat. Avocado size can vary considerably, so the gram measurements below are estimates rather than fixed serving sizes.
| Size / Portion | Edible weight | Calories |
|---|---|---|
| Thin slice | ~20g | 32 kcal |
| ¼ avocado | ~50g | 80 kcal |
| ½ small avocado | ~75g | 120 kcal |
| ½ medium avocado | ~100g | 160 kcal |
| Small avocado (whole) | ~100g | 160 kcal |
| Medium avocado (whole) | ~150g | 240 kcal |
| Large avocado (whole) | ~200g | 320 kcal |
| Extra-large avocado (whole) | ~250g | 400 kcal |
Calculations use an approximate value of 160 kcal per 100g of avocado flesh. The weight excludes the skin and stone. Added ingredients, such as oil or salt-based seasonings, are not included.
Avocado nutrition per 100g
Avocado contains mostly unsaturated fat, along with fibre, carbohydrates and a small amount of protein. The table shows approximate values per 100g and for a medium serving containing 150g of edible flesh.
| Nutrient | Per 100g | 150g serving |
|---|---|---|
| Calories | 160 kcal | 240 kcal |
| Total fat | 14.7g | 22.1g |
| — Saturated fat | 2.1g | 3.2g |
| — Monounsaturated fat | 9.8g | 14.7g |
| Carbohydrates | 8.5g | 12.8g |
| — Fibre | 6.7g | 10.1g |
| — Sugars | 0.7g | 1.1g |
| Protein | 2.0g | 3.0g |
| Potassium | 485mg | 728mg |
| Folate (vitamin B9) | 81µg | 122µg |
These are reference estimates. Nutrient levels can vary with avocado variety, growing conditions and ripeness.
Why is avocado relatively high in calories?
Avocado is different from many other fruits because it contains a relatively high proportion of fat. Fat provides around 9 calories per gram, compared with about 4 calories per gram from carbohydrates and protein. This helps explain why avocado has more calories per 100g than fruit such as apples, oranges or strawberries.
Much of the fat in avocado is monounsaturated fat, including oleic acid, which is also found in foods such as olive oil. Avocado also provides fibre and a range of vitamins and minerals. Its calorie content does not make it inherently unhealthy; the amount you eat and your overall diet matter too.
Avocado calories compared with other fruits
Comparing calories per 100g is a useful way to see how avocado differs from other common fruits. The values below are approximate and may vary depending on the variety and ripeness.
| Fruit | Calories per 100g |
|---|---|
| 🥑 Avocado | 160 kcal |
| 🍌 Banana | 89 kcal |
| 🍇 Grapes | 67 kcal |
| 🍎 Apple | 52 kcal |
| 🍊 Orange | 47 kcal |
| 🍓 Strawberry | 32 kcal |
How to calculate avocado calories
If you know the edible weight of your avocado, estimating its calories is straightforward. Using the reference value of 160 kcal per 100g, multiply the weight in grams by 1.6.
Calories = avocado weight in grams × 1.6
For example, 75g of avocado contains approximately 120 calories, while 150g contains around 240 calories. This calculation uses the edible flesh only, not the skin or stone.
If you are making guacamole or avocado toast, remember to include the other ingredients separately. Bread, oil, cheese and other additions can significantly increase the total calories in the meal.
